With its state slogan America at its Best, this state offers a remarkable living environment and pleasurable lifestyle. Four distinct and unique seasons provide seasonal beauty and a variety of outdoor recreation.

Nashville, the state capital, proclaims itself the Country Music Capital of the World. Tennessee occupies 42,000 square land miles and has a population of nearly 5.7 million residents.

Education is highly valued in Tennessee. The University of Tennessee in Knoxville enrolls nearly 27,000 students. It is the oldest and largest public university in the state and has several satellite campuses. The Health Science Center in Memphis is the educational and research hub of the medical community. Student enrollment is nearly 2100 in the various medical programs. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga enrolls approximately 8,800 students in its bachelor, master, and doctoral degree programs.

Notably, eight University of Tennessee programs ranked in the top ten in the latest US News & World Report selection of the top graduate programs in the country. Famous University of Tennessee alumni include a Nobel Laureate, six Rhodes Scholars, six Pulitzer Prize winners, and eleven NASA astronauts.

From mountains to caves, lakes to underground seas, outdoor recreation is plentiful in Tennessee. The Lost Sea in Sweetwater on the eastern part of Tennessee is the largest underground lake in the United States. Part of the Craighead Caverns cave system, this lake is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest underground lake.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park provides 500,000 incredible acres of wilderness. The highest point in the Park is Clingman's Dome, which reaches a height of 6,600 feet. Hiking trails, camping, rafting, and picnicking are favorite pastimes within the park. The Ocoee River rates as the top whitewater recreational river in the nation and was the site of the 1996 Olympic Games white water canoe and kayak competition.

Tennessee is the site of four National Military Parks: Chickamauga-Chattanooga, Stones River, Shiloh, and Fort Donelson. The Chickamauga-Chattanooga Park covers 9,000 acres and a 7-mile self-guided auto tour. Within the park are monuments illustrating the famous battle that took place in 1863, hiking and horse trails, and picnic facilities. The visitor center features several multi-media programs depicting the history and importance of this battle.

The Stones River National Battlefield and Cemetery consists of 709 acres. Established in 1865, it is the site of over 6,000 Union soldier graves. The battle at Stones River took more than 23,000 lives, which makes it one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.

Nashville's Grand Ole Opry is the longest, continuously running live radio show in the world. The Opry opened in 1925 and has entertained millions with the music of Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, and the Oak Ridge Boys. Memphis is the birthplace of the Blues and the King, Elvis Presley. From mountain music, to blues, to country, to spirirtual-Tennessee offers a unique repertoire of original music.

Tennessee is America at its Best. Come see for yourself and be pleasantly surprised.
